The Highlands is the most northerly region of mainland Great Britain and spans an area of 25,000 sq km - one third
of the landmass of Scotland and one-eighth of landward Britain. It is 10 times larger than Luxembourg, 20% larger than Wales and only marginally smaller
than Belgium.
It stretches 209 miles from Dunnet Head (north) to Dalwhinnie and 190 miles across from Ardnamurchan (west) to Auldearn. Only 4% of the population of
Scotland live within the Highlands and the overall density is the lowest of any region in the European Community. There are only eight persons per square
kilometre, compared to a Scottish average of 66. The population is 208,690 - the highest for more than a century. Inverness (population 50,970) is the
regional capital and is the only settlement in the Highlands with a population of more than 10,000. Fort William has the second biggest population with
